Hangovers: Who Needs 'em!

Yet again, the news initiated my blog this week. After hearing about a hangover “cure,” I thought the topic would make for an interesting and relevant blog post seeing as we’re all college students. This news cast where I first heard about the study was a few days ago, so I searched for an article which talked about the study a little more in depth. You can read it for yourself here.
This study tested several commonly used and recommended hangover “cures.” Some of those tested were tea, coffee, and other various foods, beverages, and remedies. The study found that Sprite was the most successful at treating the various symptoms of a hangover. When someone drinks, the ethanol in the beverage is broken down in two steps, first into acetaldehyde, which gives the common hangover symptoms, then into acetate. Sprite was found to have certain compounds which sped up this process, thus decreasing the intensity and amount of hangover symptoms which occur.
Despite thinking that tea, coffee, or other highly caffeinated beverages would help to treat the symptoms of a hangover, it seems as though they really just do the opposite. Herbal supplements and herb-based beverages showed to slow down the breakdown of ethanol, prolonging the hangover symptoms.

So, next time you find yourself facing the symptoms of a hangover, grab a Sprite!

  2. I heard about this on the radio! They were saying how Big Red and Barbacoa tacos weren't the best hangover remedy contrary to popular belief.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one that had heard about this!

  3. I had always been led to believe that the reason for the hangover symptoms was dehydration that accompanies alcohol consumption. Interesting that the there is something more to it than just that.

    1. I've heard that as well. I thought that was why "they" say to drink the same amount of water as whatever alcohol is being consumed... But I guess not? Maybe the dehydration has to do with the severity of symptoms.. I'm not sure.

  4. Well sprite does help with upset stomach why not use it when you are trying not to feel sick. Since there are so many things that people say to use when you are having a hangover, does it help to drink water with this or just drink sprite?

    1. That was my train of thought as well, why not use it to "treat" the symptoms as people do with upset stomachs? Especially since anytime I'm feeling blegh, sprite tends to make me feel better. So it seems like maybe there's some sort of other compound aside from the one that breaks down alcohol which treats the sluggish feeling that Sprite helps with. Idk, I couldn't find the published study on this, so my guess is that it's in the publication stages. I have no idea if water is something you drink as well, or what..

  5. I guess caffeinated drinks makes sense as to why it would slow down the process because acetaldehyde occurs naturally in coffee. It's like taking another dose of an alcoholic beverage in the middle of having a hangover. Doesn't sound fun to me!
